Business Insurance Advisors feature on radio show

Dave & Jason from our Commercial Insurance Department made their radio debut!

Yesterday, Dave Herd (Manager of our Business Insurance Department) and Jason Munnelly (Manager of our Fleet Insurance Department) featured on Redshift radio!  They were asked on the ‘Tweet-up Thursday’ show to give advice to the listeners on business and personal insurance.

There were many calls, texts and tweets asking a variety of questions.  Here’s an example of some of the questions our business insurance experts were asked:

With lots of comparison websites and insurance available on the internet, why use a broker?

  1. Make use of their experience - There are many variables when it comes to insurance and a broker can advise you on the best options to choose according to your individual needs.  Insurance companies rate risks in different ways and an experienced advisor will know who to place you with.  Many people find the comparison websites unclear.  We all need to save money but be wise about the areas you compromise on.
  2. Saves you time and money - A broker saves you time and money as we search the insurance market on your behalf.  We have close relationships with the top insurers and ‘bulk-buying’ power so can get you a cheaper premium with the best cover.
  3. Clear advice, less hassle and help and support when you need it – We all hope it’s not going to happen but we have insurance for a reason… in case something goes wrong.  If you need to make a claim then your broker is there to support you.  They are local and can explain everything clearly to you.  They have a wealth of experience and will act on your behalf to ensure you get the best compensation package possible.

Do I need to insure Solar Panels separately to my home insurance?

It is important to inform your insurance company if you have solar panels installed on your house but they can be covered on your existing policy.  By informing the insurance company, you are ensuring that if any damage occurs, you’ll be covered for replacements and re-instalment if needed.

I am thinking of buying a vehicle to transport my 2 horses.  Is a trailer cheaper to insure than a horsebox?  Is there any advice available before I buy?

Trailers alone are much cheaper to insure than horseboxes but you obviously need to consider the insurance for your towing vehicle too.  We do have an equestrian insurance team within County Insurance.  They are happy to offer any advice free of charge to help you decide.  Call them on 0800 975 6772, email enquiries@horsebox-insurance.co.uk or visit the horsebox insurance website (http://www.horsebox-insurance.co.uk/)

Business Insurance seems a bit of a minefield!  Is there one policy available to cover all of my needs?

It can be confusing when deciding what insurance you need for your business.  A broker can help you go through your options.  There is cover such as Commercial Combined policies which can provide you with all of the protection you need.  There are certain laws involved with insuring businesses for instance if you employ any staff, you must have Employers’ Liability.  If you would like some advice, please call our commercial department on 0800 980 3139 or submit an online business insurance quote

I have a teenager who is about to turn 17.  When he has past his driving test, who is the best insurer to go with?

It is difficult and expensive for young drivers.  They can be added as named drivers on parents’ policies but they must not be the sole user of the vehicle.  It is generally the case that young drivers have to take the high premiums at first and hope to build a few years of no claims which will bring the cost down in the future.

We do offer a scheme with XS Direct which offers lower premiums in return for a higher excess should you have to claim.  It is ideal for those who do not have a no claims history (a young driver or company car driver etc.) or are facing very large premiums (luxury/sports car drivers etc.).  It gives drivers chance to build a no claims bonus certificate and there is only a large amount to pay if they make a claim (only 1 in 15 have to claim on average).

For more information on this scheme, call 0800 977 5857 or fill in an online car insurance quote.

Why has my insurance gone up in price over the last few years?

Unfortunately, we now live in a ‘blame and claim’ culture.  The amount of personal accident claims, amongst others, has increased hugely in recent years.  The fact that business insurance hasn’t increased in price as much as personal insurance shows this.

The general public are having to pay for these claims with increased premiums.  Insurance companies are now working very hard to investigate claims to be certain that only the completely legitimate and justified ones are paid out, therefore premiums are beginning to stabilise.
